History of the Burroughs Home and Gardens in Fort Myers
Council members must continue to reside in that particular ward. By the spring of 1864, Fort Myers was protected by a 500-foot-long breastwork, 7 feet (2.1 m) high and 15 feet (4.6 m) wide, extending in an arc around the land side of the fort. The Seminole War-era blockhouse had been repaired and another two-story blockhouse built.
It was abandoned in 1858, at the end of the Third Seminole War. During the Second Seminole War, between 1835 and 1842, the U.S. Army operated Fort Dulaney at Punta Rassa, at the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River.

The sociable heiress deeded the much-loved historic home to the City of Fort Myersin 1978 when she died. Now listed on the Register of Historic Places, this historic home was originally built for John T. Murphy, a cattleman from Montana. Nelson Burroughs acquired it from him in 1918 and it became a winter home for his family, including wife, Adeline, and two lively daughters, Jettie and Mona.
The gardens were landscaped and used to host spectacular parties for similarly wealthy families including the Firestones, Fords, and Edisons. Burroughs Home & Gardens was built in 1901 and remains one of the first Georgian revival style homes in Fort Myers. It is ideally located on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River in Downtown Fort Myers. It has also earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. Therefore it is no surprise that this home attracted many familiar names, like the Edisons and Fords.
The fort was named for Brevet Colonel Abraham Charles Myers, quartermaster for the Army's Department of Florida and future son-in-law of Major Twiggs. It covered about 139 acres , and soon had 57 buildings, including a two-story blockhouse that was pictured in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, and a 1,000-foot-long wharf at which ships could dock. Irvin Solomon notes that Fort Myers was described "as 'one of the finest and largest' forts of the Seminole Wars".
The home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and as a local historic landmark in 1994. The Burroughs Home is under the management of the Uncommon Friends Foundation which is committed to Character Education, Business Ethics and Historic Preservation. The Foundation also safeguards the James Newton Archive and the remaining Burroughs Family artifacts. The home and gardens are available for historical tours, teas, special events, weddings, receptions, and Holiday House.
